The Keychron Q6 HE 8K is one model in Keychron's wider Q HE 8K series of wired keyboards with magnetic switches. These keyboards have aluminum cases and double gasket-mounted designs that give them a softer, almost springy typing experience. This newest 8K version is an iterative update over the earlier Keychron Q HE series boards, increasing the maximum polling rate to 8000Hz for slightly lower and more consistent latency. Each keyboard also comes with a small toolkit for disassembly and modification, and it uses robust web-based software for customizing lighting, profiles, key assignments, and advanced magnetic switch options like SOCD and Rapid Trigger.

We tested the full-size Keychron Q6 HE 8K, but other size variants are available. See the Differences Between Variants section for details.

Our Verdict

0.0
Gaming

The Keychron Q HE 8K series keyboards are excellent for gaming. They have superb build quality and very low single-key and multi-key latency, making them well-suited for casual or competitive play. They also have full RGB backlighting, which you can adjust in the software, along with advanced actuation settings like Rapid Trigger and SOCD. However, the keycaps lack shine-through legends, so the legends aren't readable in the dark.

Pros
  • Superb build quality.

  • Remarkably low single-key and multi-key latency.

Cons
  • Keycaps lack shine-through legends.

Office

The Keychron Q HE 8K series boards are decent for office use. They have superb build quality, and their double gasket-mounted design lends a slightly soft, cushioned typing feel. That said, typing noise is on the louder side and may be disruptive in shared or noise-sensitive spaces. The keyboards also have a fairly tall profile, so typing can be fatiguing over long stretches if you don't use a wrist rest, and they don't come with one included.

Pros
  • Superb build quality.

  • Excellent typing quality.

Cons
  • Fairly tall profile; no wrist rest included.

  • Somewhat loud.

Mobile/Tablet

The Keychron Q HE 8K series keyboards are wired-only models, so they aren't suitable for use with tablets or mobile devices.

Programming

The Keychron Q HE 8K series keyboards are good for programming. They have superb build quality and a double gasket-mounted design that provides a softer, more cushioned typing feel. That said, their fairly tall profile can be fatiguing over long periods without a wrist rest, and one isn't included. Some size variants in this series have dedicated macro keys, but all keys are macro-programmable in the software. Unfortunately, the keycaps lack shine-through legends, which may be an issue if you prefer working in lower lighting and need to read the legends on the keys.

Pros
  • Superb build quality.

  • Excellent typing quality.

  • Some size variants have dedicated macro keys.

Cons
  • Keycaps lack shine-through legends.

  • Fairly tall profile; no wrist rest included.

Entertainment / HTPC

The Keychron Q HE 8K series boards are bad for entertainment or home theater PC setups. They're bulky and very heavy due to their aluminum cases, so they aren't practical to use from a couch or chair unless you have a desk nearby. They're also wired-only, so you'll need to use them close to your computer. They lack dedicated media keys, though they have default media hotkeys. Lastly, while they have full RGB backlighting, the keycaps lack shine-through legends, so you can't read the legends in the dark.

Pros
None
Cons
  • Keycaps lack shine-through legends.

  • Heavy; wired-only.

Raw Performance

The Keychron Q HE 8K series keyboards deliver superb raw performance, with very low single-key and multi-key latency suitable for competitive gaming in any genre. That said, their latency is slightly less consistent than some competing dedicated gaming keyboards with maximum polling rates of 8000Hz, though this inconsistency is largely inconsequential, as it's far too small to notice in-game.

Pros
  • Remarkably low single-key and multi-key latency.

Cons
  • Slightly less consistent than most 8000Hz competitors.

    Popular Keyboard Comparisons

The Keychron Q HE 8K series is a premium magnetic keyboard lineup that combines gaming-focused performance features with a more traditional enthusiast keyboard design. It competes most directly against similarly priced options like the Wooting 80HE and NuPhy WH80. While it doesn't quite deliver the same cutting-edge performance as those two options, its biggest advantage is its range of size variants, giving you more choice if you prefer a specific keyboard size.

That said, these keyboards are quite a bit more expensive than some stronger value options with similar or better feature sets. For example, the Lemokey P1 HE, from Keychron's sister brand, doesn't perform quite as well, but it also has an aluminum case, adds wireless connectivity, and offers an even more premium typing feel out of the box. Less expensive options like the MonsGeek M1 V5 TMR are also very compelling, with industry-leading performance, an aluminum case, similarly excellent typing quality, wireless connectivity, and TMR sockets that support both magnetic and mechanical switches.

Overall, the Q HE 8K series remains a strong all-around performer at a premium price point. It's especially appealing if you want an enthusiast-style keyboard with magnetic switches in a specific size, since many other high-end magnetic keyboards don't offer as many size options.

    Wooting 80HE

    Track

The Wooting 80HE and Keychron Q3 HE 8K are keyboards with magnetic switches that let you customize actuation points and use advanced features like Rapid Trigger and SOCD. The Wooting has a slightly nonstandard key layout compared to the Keychron, and it's available with either a plastic or zinc case. It also delivers slightly better and more consistent latency performance. The Keychron, on the other hand, belongs to a broader lineup with several other size variants available.

Keychron K2 HE [K4 HE, K8 HE, etc.]

    Track

The Keychron K10 HE and the Keychron Q6 HE 8K are full-sized keyboards with magnetic switches, and both are part of broader lineups with other size variants. The K HE series keyboards have wireless connectivity, plastic cases with aluminum frames, and keycaps with shine-through legends. The Q HE 8K series keyboards are wired-only and have solid aluminum cases. They also offer better raw performance.

    Lemokey P1 HE

    Track

The Lemokey P1 HE and Keychron Q1 HE 8K are compact 75% keyboards with magnetic switches. They're both also part of wider lineups with other size variants available. Both keyboards have similarly superb build quality with solid aluminum cases. The major difference is that the Lemokey has wireless connectivity and shine-through legends, while the Keychron is wired-only without shine-through legends and slightly better raw performance.

    Keychron V3 [V1, V5, V6, etc.] Ultra 8K

    Track

The Keychron V3 Ultra 8K and Keychron Q3 HE 8K use different switch technologies but offer very similar raw gaming performance. The V3 Ultra 8K has wireless connectivity and mechanical switches, while the Q3 HE 8K is a wired-only model with magnetic switches, which allow for customizable actuation and advanced features like Rapid Trigger and SOCD. The Q3 HE 8K also has a solid aluminum case and better overall build quality. Both keyboards are also part of broader lineups with several other size variants available.
