The Tuft and Needle Original II is a budget-friendly all-foam mattress with a Medium-Firm feel. It includes a quilted layer with gel-infused memory foam and polyfoam comfort and support layers. The cover and memory foam layer are marketed as cooling materials. The foam in the mattress is certified by CertiPUR-US, meaning it's been verified by an independent lab as containing low levels of harmful chemicals and VOCs. The mattress also holds a GREENGUARD Gold certification, meaning it's been independently tested and emits low levels of indoor pollutants.

Our Verdict

6.5
Side Sleeping
  • 4.6
    Light Weight
  • 6.9
    Average Weight
  • 8.1
    Heavy Weight

The Tuft and Needle Original II is suitable for heavier side sleepers, who will sink into the comfort layers enough to relieve pressure on the arm and shoulder. The sleeping surface molds around you closely, which also helps cushion pressure points. However, average-weight and especially lighter people won't sink in as far, and won't benefit as much from the contouring sleeping surface. As a result, it'll put more pressure on your arm and shoulder, and it isn't a comfortable option for side sleeping.

Pros
  • Heavier side sleepers sink in more and get great pressure relief.

Cons
  • Lighter side sleepers barely sink in and get little pressure relief.

  • Pressure relief for average-weight side sleepers is just okay.

Back Sleeping

    Light Weight
  • 6.6
    Average Weight
  • 6.1
    Heavy Weight

The Tuft and Needle Original II is suitable for lighter back sleepers. It offers good support for lighter people, so your spine will stay aligned, which is important for comfortable back sleeping. However, you'll hardly sink into it, and you might prefer a mattress with better pressure relief. If you're average-weight or heavier, it'll do a better job of cushioning pressure points like your back and shoulders, but its support performance is much worse. Your hips will sink in further, and your spine won't be well-aligned.

Pros
  • Good support for lighter back sleepers, so your spine stays aligned.

Cons
  • More support would be ideal for average-weight back sleepers.

  • Heavier people won't get enough support for spinal alignment.

Stomach Sleeping

  • 5.9
    Heavy Weight

The Tuft and Needle Original II is a good option for lighter stomach sleepers. Lighter individuals don't sink in much overall, which helps your spine stay aligned and prevents your back from arching when you sleep on your stomach. However, it's not nearly as supportive for average-weight and heavier people, so if you sleep on your stomach, your spine won't be aligned, and you're more likely to wake up with aches and pains.

Pros
  • Good support for lighter stomach sleepers, so your spine stays aligned.

Cons
  • More support would be ideal for average-weight stomach sleepers.

    Firmness

The Tuft and Needle Original II is an all-foam Medium-Firm mattress with comfort layers of responsive memory foam and polyfoam. These relatively firm layers won't let you sink in very much unless you're in the heavier weight category. Those sleepers will benefit from its highly contouring sleeping surface and get great pressure relief. Unfortunately, despite its firmer feel, it doesn't offer good support for most people. Lighter individuals who won't sink into it much overall will be well-supported, but if you're average-weight or heavier, your hips will sink in overly far, putting your spine out of alignment, and it doesn't provide the support you might expect from a Medium-Firm mattress.

    Firmness

This Medium-Firm mattress's support and pressure relief performance vary a lot depending on your weight, and it's not as versatile as some mattresses with a similar firmness level. It's only suitable for back and stomach sleeping if you're in the lighter weight category, since it only offers good support for people in that weight category. If you're average-weight or heavier, your hips will sink in overly far, and your spine won't stay well-aligned.

On the other hand, it's a comfortable option for heavier side sleepers, who will sink in more and get great pressure relief. If you're average-weight or lighter, you won't sink in as much, and you'll feel more pressure on your arm and shoulder when side sleeping.

    Foam Layer Thickness

The quilted layer is made of gel-infused memory foam that has a responsive feel, unlike regular memory foam. The upper and lower comfort layers are both made of polyfoam that has an even bouncier feel. These layers don't allow much sinking or have an enveloping feel, although heavier people who sink in more and engage with the lower comfort layer will get much better pressure relief. The transition and support layers are also made of resilient polyfoam, but unfortunately, they don't create good support for most people.

    Longevity

The Tuft and Needle Original II is a moderately durable mattress. Most of the foam layers are made of good-quality polyfoam that will resist forming permanent impressions and sagging. The memory foam in the quilted layer is lower-density and lower-quality; therefore, that layer is more prone to showing signs of wear.

    Pros
    • Mostly made of good-quality foam that will resist sagging and indentations.

    Cons
    • Lower-quality memory foam layer may form impressions sooner.

    6.7
    Foam Layer Mass Density

Most of the foam in the mattress is dense enough to be considered good quality, including the support, transition, lower comfort, and upper comfort layers. However, the foam in the quilted layer doesn't quite meet the standard for good-quality memory foam, and that layer is more prone to forming permanent indentations and impressions.

    Pressure Relief

The Tuft and Needle Original II's pressure relief performance depends on your weight. It's not a very enveloping mattress and doesn't allow much sinking overall, especially if you're average-weight or lighter. These people won't get much pressure relief, and it'll put uncomfortable pressure on your arm and shoulder if you sleep on your side. However, if you're heavier, you'll sink more deeply into its comfort layers, which will mold around you closely and help cushion pressure points.

    Pros
    • Heavier side sleepers sink in more and get great pressure relief.

    • Highly contouring sleeping surface adds pressure relief.

    Cons
    • Lighter side sleepers barely sink in and get little pressure relief.

    • Pressure relief for average-weight side sleepers is just okay.

    6.4
    Body Conformity

This Medium-Firm mattress's body conformity performance depends on your weight. If you're in the lighter weight category, you'll hardly sink in, and it'll put a lot of pressure on your arm and shoulder if you sleep on your side. Its performance is better for average-weight people, but it's still just mediocre, so it won't offer good pressure relief for side sleepers in that weight category either. However, it offers excellent body conformity for heavier people, who will sink in much more, and it's a suitable option for side sleepers in that category.

    7.1
    Comfort Layers Envelopment

This mattress doesn't let your body sink in much overall, so you feel like you're sleeping 'on' instead of 'in' it. The sleeping surface is highly contouring, however, so it molds closely around you, which helps cushion pressure points.

    6.8

    Support

The Tuft and Needle Original II's support performance depends on your weight. If you're lighter, you won't sink into it very much overall, and your hips will stay aligned with the rest of your body. However, if you're average-weight, your hips will sink further into its comfort layers, and your spine will bend, especially if you sleep on your back or stomach. This effect is even more pronounced for heavier individuals.

    Pros
    • Good support for lighter back/stomach sleepers, so your spine stays aligned.

    Cons
    • Heavier people won't get enough support for spinal alignment.

    • More support would be ideal for average-weight back/stomach sleepers.

    6.8
    Support

This mattress's support performance varies depending on your weight. It offers very good support for lighter people, so it'll keep your hips supported and your spine well-aligned whether you sleep on your side, back, or stomach. However, its performance for average-weight people is just okay, so your hips will sink further, which will put your spine out of alignment if you sleep on your back or stomach. Its support for heavier individuals is much worse, and it's an uncomfortable option for back and stomach sleepers in that weight category.

    8.3

    Cooling

The Tuft and Needle Original II does a great job of keeping you cool and is suitable for hot sleepers, despite its lack of an airy pocket coil layer. This mattress has a cooling feel when you first get into bed, so hot sleepers can comfortably fall asleep, and it's even more cooling over eight hours, so you won't wake up later on feeling overheated either.

    Pros
    • Feels cool when you first get into bed.

    • Excellent cooling over eight hours.

    Cons
    8.3
    Cooling

This mattress does a great job of keeping you cool. It has a cooling feel when you first get into bed and does an even better job of dissipating heat over eight hours. Overall, it's a good option for hot sleepers, whether you usually feel overheated as you're falling asleep or often wake up later on feeling hot.

    7.5

    Motion Dissipation

The Tuft and Needle Original II has good motion isolation, making it suitable for couples. While you'll feel some of your partner's smaller movements as well as larger ones, motion is mostly felt near the source and dissipates quickly, so it's less noticeable. However, if you sleep lightly, you may want a mattress that prevents you from feeling any movement at all.

    Pros
    • Motion dissipates quickly and won't make the mattress wobble.

    • Motion is mostly felt near the source, not all over the mattress.

    Cons
    • You'll feel some smaller movements.

    7.5
    Motion Isolation

This mattress has good motion isolation overall. It doesn't dampen movement very effectively, so you'll feel your partner's smaller shifts as well as bigger movements, like someone getting into bed. However, motion stays localized, so it's mostly felt near its source instead of all over the mattress, and it dissipates very quickly, so movements are only felt briefly and don't make the mattress wobble.

    9.4

    Responsiveness

The Tuft and Needle Original II is a very responsive mattress, so it's a good option if you don't like feeling constricted or hugged by your mattress. It's mostly made of resilient polyfoam and has a bouncy feel, so your movements feel supported. The sleeping surface also adapts very quickly when you move, so you won't feel stuck in place.

    Pros
    • Bouncy feel, so movements feel supported.

    • Sleeping surface adapts quickly, so you don't feel stuck in place.

    Cons
    9.8
    Responsiveness

The sleeping surface is extremely responsive, so it bounces back quickly after being compressed, which prevents you from feeling stuck in place.

    7.9
    Bounciness

It has a bouncy feel, so your movements feel supported and it's easy to change sleeping positions.

    Foam Layer Resilience

The memory foam quilted layer has a somewhat resilient, bouncy feel, so it's not as slow-moving as classic memory foam. The mattress's other layers, made of polyfoam, are even more resilient, which helps give it a bouncy feel overall, especially for an all-foam mattress.

    8.4

    Edge Support

The Tuft and Needle Original II has impressive edge support. This all-foam mattress doesn't have any additional component built into its edges for support, but its firm foam layers create sturdy edges. You can comfortably sleep near the side of the bed, and it's suitable for people with mobility issues who want a sturdy surface for getting in and out of bed.

    Pros
    • Edges don't compress much under pressure.

    • Edges compress evenly instead of forming a ramp, so you don't feel pushed out of bed.

    Cons
    8.4
    Edge Support

This mattress has impressive edge support. Although it has no extra component reinforcing its edges, they don't compress easily and won't sink very much when you sit or sleep on the side of the bed.

    Edge Construction
    Additional Tests
    Design Style

This mattress is 30.3 cm (11.9 inches) thick, so standard fitted sheets will fit.

    Components Cover

The cover is made of a polyester blend, but the manufacturer doesn't disclose its exact composition.

    Popular Mattress Comparisons

The Tuft and Needle Original II is a Medium-Firm all-foam mattress. Its bouncy, responsive feel and non-enveloping sleeping surface make it a good option for people who don't like to feel constricted or hugged by a mattress. However, it's not the most versatile option, as it offers limited support and little pressure relief. The Tuft and Needle Mint offers better pressure relief regardless of your weight, and significantly better support for average-weight and heavier people, so it works for a wider range of sleepers. If you're a heavier person looking for an affordable Medium-Firm mattress for combination sleeping, other all-foam models like the Novaform ComfortGrande Plus or Nectar Classic do a better job of supporting your hips and keeping your spine aligned.

For more options with a similar firmness level, check out our recommendation for medium-firm mattresses. If you want a mattress with a hugging, enveloping feel, you might want one of the best memory foam mattresses. Or, if you're looking for a budget-friendly bed, we also recommend affordable mattresses

    Purple Mattress

The Purple Mattress is better than the Tuft and Needle Original II for most people, mainly because of its significantly better cooling. It's also more durable, since it only contains good-quality foam. That said, the Tuft and Needle has better edge support, so you might prefer it if you want a sturdy surface for getting in and out of bed. Its much better support for average-weight people makes it more suitable for combination sleepers in that category, as well.

    Nectar Classic

The Nectar Classic and Tuft and Needle Original II have different strengths. The Nectar's better support for heavier individuals makes it more suitable for combination sleepers in that weight category. Its significantly better motion isolation performance means you'll feel fewer of your partner's movements. However, it has a slow-moving, hugging feel, and if ease of movement is a priority, you might prefer the Tuft and Needle, which is very responsive. The Tuft and Needle contains a bigger proportion of good-quality foam, so it's more versatile, and it has much better edge support.

    Tuft and Needle Mint

The Tuft and Needle Mint is better than the Tuft and Needle Original II for most people. The Mint is much more supportive and provides significantly more pressure relief overall, which makes it a comfortable option for a wider range of sleepers. It's more cooling and has significantly better motion isolation. The Original II has a much more responsive feel, so if you're a heavier side sleeper or lighter back/stomach sleeper and ease of motion is a priority, you might prefer it.

    Novaform ComfortGrande Plus

The Novaform ComfortGrande Plus and Tuft and Needle Original II have different strengths. The Novaform's much better support performance makes it a better option for average-weight and heavier back, stomach, and combination sleepers. It also offers much better motion isolation, so you'll feel fewer of your partner's movements. On the other hand, the Tuft and Needle does a much better job of keeping you cool. It's also much more responsive, so it feels easier to move around on.
