HP DeskJet 4155e [4133e, 4152e, 4155, 4158e] Printer Review

Tested using Methodology v1.2
Updated Feb 24, 2022 at 04:15 pm
HP DeskJet 4155e [4133e, 4152e, 4155, 4158e] Picture

The HP DeskJet 4155e is identical to the HP DeskJet Plus 4155, but it comes with a six-month supply of free ink through HP+. It's an all-in-one color inkjet that has both a flatbed scanner and an automatic document feeder, which lets you scan different media types with ease. Unfortunately, it performs badly in almost all other respects, with terrible page yields, a disappointingly high cost-per-print, and poor printing speeds. It also has a narrow color gamut and bad color accuracy, and it prints mediocre-looking photos with no support for borderless prints. Fortunately, its decent connectivity options mean you can print from different devices, and you can use the HP Smart mobile app to easily use and manage the printer.

The HP DeskJet 4100e all-in-one printer series includes many variants. All of the variants have the same features and performance as the DeskJet 4155e we tested; the model number simply changes slightly depending on the region, retailer, and color of the printer. You can see all the variants in the Differences Between Variants section below.

Our Verdict

N/A Family

The HP DeskJet 4155e is a disappointing printer for family use. It has a flatbed scanner with good scanning resolution and color depth, so you can easily digitize old photos. Unfortunately, it prints black-only and color documents at a poor speed, and it isn't ideal for photo printing since photos have a lot of banding and colors that look very inaccurate to their originals.

Pros
  • Flatbed scanner has good resolution and color depth.
  • XL and XXL cartridge sizes available.
Cons
  • Bad color accuracy.
  • Doesn't support borderless printing.
  • Terrible page yield and disappointing cost-per-print.
  • Only has one color cartridge.
N/A Small/Home Office

The HP DeskJet 4155e is a poor printer for small or home offices. It has awful black and color page yields, takes a while to print one-page documents, and it can be tricky to reach paper jams or the ink cartridges. While it has an automatic document feeder, it doesn't support duplex scanning, meaning you have to manually flip double-sided sheets over. Likewise, there's no automatic double-sided printing, so the printer prompts you to flip the sheets over when it's time to print the other side.

Pros
  • Has an automatic document feeder.
  • XL and XXL cartridge sizes available.
Cons
  • Terrible page yield and disappointing cost-per-print.
  • Very slow printing speed.
  • No duplex scanning.
  • Manual double-sided printing.
N/A Student

The HP DeskJet 4155e is a disappointing printer for students. While its flatbed scanner and automatic document feeder lets you scan different media like textbooks and handwritten notes, it has a poor cost-per-print for black-only and color documents. Additionally, it takes a while to print single-page documents. Double-sided printing isn't automatic, so you need to manually flip pages over when prompted.

Pros
  • Flatbed scanner has good resolution and color depth.
  • XL and XXL cartridge sizes available.
Cons
  • Terrible page yield and disappointing cost-per-print.
  • Very slow printing speed.
  • No Bluetooth or external media support.
N/A Black & White

The HP 4155e is poor for black and white printing. Its black page yield is bad, while its text document printing speed is terrible. While you can get XL and XXL high-yield cartridges, you'll likely still need to replace them if you print in high volumes. Also, double-sided printing is manual, so you need to flip pages over manually when the printer prompts you.

Pros
  • Has an automatic document feeder.
  • XL and XXL cartridge sizes available.
Cons
  • Terrible page yield and disappointing cost-per-print.
  • Very slow printing speed.
  • Manual double-sided printing.
N/A Photo

The HP 4155e is sub-par for photo printing. Photos look mediocre, with some banding and color in gray sections. The printer has a narrow color gamut and struggles to properly produce dark colors, and its poor color accuracy means photos don't look like their originals. Also, it's awfully slow when printing photos, and it doesn't support borderless printing.

Pros
  • Accepts 4" × 6" and 5" × 7" photo paper formats.
  • XL and XXL cartridge sizes available.
Cons
  • Bad color accuracy.
  • Doesn't support borderless printing.
  • Terrible page yield and disappointing cost-per-print.
  • Only has one color cartridge.

Compared To Other Printers

The HP DeskJet 4155e is an all-in-one color inkjet that performs poorly overall. It prints mediocre-looking photos with bad color accuracy, and it doesn't support borderless printing. Additionally, it prints documents and photos at a poor speed, and double-sided printing isn't automatic. Its automatic document feeder makes it easy to scan multi-page documents, but even with that said, you can get significantly better-performing models in the same price range.

For more options, check out our recommendations for the best all-in-one printers, the best home printers, and the best inkjet printers.

HP ENVY 6455e

The HP ENVY 6455e and the HP DeskJet 4155e are very similar printers with near identical feature and performance. The only notable difference is that the 4155e prints slower and doesn't support automatic duplex printing.

HP DeskJet 2755e [2723e, 2734e, 2742e, 2752, 2752e, 2755]

The HP DeskJet 2755e and the HP DeskJet 4155e are both all-in-one inkjet printers with nearly identical features and performance. The only difference is that the 4155e has an automatic document feeder to process multi-page documents faster.

Canon PIXMA MG3620

The Canon PIXMA MG3620 is much better than the HP DeskJet 4155e. The Canon produces higher quality documents and more detailed photos, and it doesn't cost as much to maintain over time because its ink cartridges last longer. It also prints faster and supports automatic double-sided printing. The HP has an automatic feeder, which the Canon lacks, but it's slow, and the scan quality isn't as good as the Canon's, as it has trouble capturing fine details.

HP DeskJet 3755 [3772]

The HP DeskJet 4155e and the HP DeskJet 3755 are both all-in-one inkjet printers designed for home use. In terms of print quality, both printer perform similarly when it comes to documents, but the 3755 is much better for photos because it has a wider color range and color accuracy, and it can produce finer details. As for maintenance costs, the 4155e yields more prints and is less expensive to maintain over time. The other differences have to do with the design and scanner features. The 3755 is more compact, so it's better for tight spaces, but it doesn't have a flatbed scanner.

HP ENVY 6055e

The HP ENVY 6055e is slightly better than the HP DeskJet 4155e. The ENVY 6055e produces finer details in photos, prints faster, and supports automatic duplex printing and borderless printing. The DeskJet 4155e has an automatic document feeder, which the ENVY 6055e lacks, but it's slow, as it only scans three pages per minute.

Brother MFC-J1010DW

The Brother MFC-J1010DW is much better than the HP DeskJet 4155e for most uses. The Brother's build feels much sturdier, and it has a larger color display with more buttons to help you navigate the settings menu. It also produces better quality documents and photos, scans and prints faster, and its ink cartridges last longer, which will help you save money.

Type All in One

The HP DeskJet 4152e feels poorly built, with an identical design to the HP DeskJet Plus 4155. Though the printer body feels solid and its power cord is removable, it has no input tray, and the rear feeder feels flimsy to pull out and in. Printed sheets also tend to fall off the output tray as they come out. You can only access paper jams via the printhead compartment, and the ink compartment is difficult to access if you have big hands. The scanner lid's hinges also don't raise, so if you need to scan thicker objects like textbooks, it'll remain partially open.

The HP DeskJet 4152e has typical maintenance requirements for an inkjet printer, but you have to replace the cartridges frequently. There's always a risk of printhead or cartridge clogging; however, it likely won't occur as long as you keep the printer within the acceptable temperature range stated by the manufacturer (59–95°F, or 15–35°C), with the cartridges at least half full. If you leave the printer unused for too long and notice reduced print quality, you can use the printhead cleaning, printhead alignment, and smear cleaning maintenance tasks to restore the quality.

Otherwise, you have to maintain the printer frequently; its low page yields mean you have to replace the cartridges often, and it isn't easy to do so as you can only access them via a narrow door inside the output tray. In the case of a paper jam, you can only access the sheet rollers via the same narrow door in the front, with no other access anywhere on the printer.

The HP 4155e has a poor display. It's only a simple icon LCD with seven physical buttons for managing printer functions. While it has no swivel or tilt capability and has narrow side view angles, its vertical viewing angles are good, with display indicators visible when you're either seated or standing.

The HP 4152e has an awful ink cartridge system. Both the black and color page yields are terrible, so you need to replace the cartridges very frequently if you print a lot. The printer is also compatible with two high-yield cartridge sizes in black and tri-color formats: the HP 67XL and the HP 67XXL. However, we couldn't find the XXL-format replacement cartridges available on the manufacturer's website at the time of writing. If you want a printer with better page yields, check out the Canon PIXMA MG2522.

During setup, you can enable HP+, which means that your printer will only accept HP cartridges for the duration of its use. The printer accepts third-party remanufactured cartridges, but using them may void the warranty.

The HP DeskJet 4152e has a flatbed scanner and an automatic document feeder. However, it doesn't support duplex scanning, so manually dealing with multi-page double-sided documents can be inconvenient as you need to flip them over after scanning one side. Additionally, it's slow to scan, so expect to wait a while for long reports or multi-page signed contracts. Fortunately, it has software-based OCR, letting you save scanned documents as searchable PDFs for easy sorting and keyword searches.

The flatbed scanner has a 1200 DPI scanning resolution, and its 24-bit color depth gives scanned photos plenty of detail and color accuracy for basic touch-ups. However, the scanner isn't good at detecting the edges of a document, which causes large margins and black lines around the sides. If you want a similar printer with better scan quality, check out the Epson Expression Home XP-5200.

The HP DeskJet 4158e has a poor color gamut. It has a hard time producing dark colors, especially dark blues, and the transitions between colors aren't very smooth.

On macOS, you can easily use AirPrint to print and scan without manually installing any drivers or applications.
