The 6 Best Mattresses-In-A-Box of 2026

Best Mattress In A Box

A mattress-in-a-box, or bed-in-a-box, is a mattress that's compressed, vacuum-sealed, and rolled before it ships. This allows mattresses to be sent by regular mail rather than scheduled delivery. The earliest models were budget-friendly all-foam models, but nowadays, you can get almost any kind of mattress delivered in a box: mattresses with all-foam and hybrid designs are widely available at a range of price points, from cheap to high-end.

Just like with a mattress you'd try out in the store, you should look for the right level of pressure relief and support for your body type and sleeping position, while also considering other aspects that are important to you, like cooling or edge support. If you're considering an all-foam bed-in-a-box, it's worth noting that all-foam mattresses sometimes lack bounce, which makes moving around and changing sleeping positions feel more difficult. That said, while you usually can't try out a bed-in-a-box before it arrives on your doorstep, most companies offer a long return window.

We've tested more than 70 mattresses, including 57 mattresses-in-a-box, and these are our recommendations for the best bed-in-a-box mattresses. How We Test Mattresses
How We Test Mattresses

We've tested over 70 mattresses. We purchase each unit independently from major retailers, just like you, to keep our reviews free of manufacturer influence. Each mattress undergoes the same tests to measure objective data on characteristics like firmness, cooling, and motion isolation, so you can easily compare results. Since we buy all our mattresses, we can tear them down layer by layer and isolate the mechanical properties of every component: quilted tops, foams, coils, and any special materials.

  1. Best Mattress-In-A-Box

Pick if: You want a versatile mattress with a hugging, enveloping feel.
Skip if: You want solid edge support or a more durable option.

The best mattress-in-a-box that we've tested is the Casper Snow. This high-end, hybrid mattress's versatile performance makes it a great option for combination sleepers and couples with different needs. Its memory foam comfort layers give it an enveloping, slow-moving feel, while a zoned foam layer and very stiff springs add support. Most people will sink into it quite a lot, but evenly, so your hips will stay in line with the rest of your body. As a result, it offers enough pressure relief and support for most body types and sleeping positions. The company offers a 100-night trial period and a 10-year limited warranty, which is quite standard for bed-in-a-box mattresses.

It offers excellent motion dissipation, so movement doesn't travel across the mattress and dissipates quickly, reducing the likelihood of waking you. It's also amazingly cooling, so it can keep hot sleepers comfortable. When we cut open the mattress, we found polyfoam reinforcing each side, but unfortunately, it doesn't do a great job of creating sturdy edges. It's not a good option if you need sturdy sides for getting in and out of bed, and since weak edge support can make a mattress feel smaller, couples may want to consider a bigger size. It's not the most durable mattress, since the comfort layers are made of lower-quality foam and may show signs of wear sooner than those in mattresses made with better-quality materials.

  2. Best Mid-Range Mattress-In-A-Box

Pick if: You want a more responsive mattress for ease of movement or a more durable mattress.
Skip if: You're a hot sleeper and need a mattress that feels cool as you're falling asleep.

If you're shopping at a mid-range price point and are okay sacrificing some cooling performance, the Helix Midnight Luxe 2025 is worth considering, especially if you prefer a mattress that feels easier to move around on. This Medium mattress is a good option for most side sleepers, with conforming, enveloping comfort layers that relieve pressure on your arm and shoulder. While you'll sink deeply into the comfort layers, it still responds quickly when you move, so you won't feel stuck in place when you try to change sleeping positions. It's also a more durable option that uses a mix of lower-density and good-quality foam, which should help it resist sagging for longer than our top pick, the Casper Snow. Helix offers a limited lifetime warranty and a slightly longer 120-night return window.

Unlike the Casper, it has stiffer coils that reinforce its sides, making it a good option for couples who want to maximize comfortable sleeping space. However, it doesn't handle motion quite as well. It still prevents you from feeling most movements, but motion dissipates somewhat slowly, which makes larger movements more likely to wake you. Similarly, it's not quite as cooling as the Casper, especially when you first get into bed, making it less ideal for hot sleepers who want to fall asleep in a cool environment. Still, its cooling is enough to keep most people comfortable. Finally, while it's suitable for a range of side sleepers, average-weight and heavier combination sleepers may want more support. It's only available in one firmness level, but you can add an additional support layer meant to help keep your hips from sinking.

  3. Best Budget Mattress-In-A-Box

Pick if: You want strong pressure relief for side sleeping, motion isolation is a big priority, or you want a long trial period.
Skip if: You prefer bouncy mattresses or need sturdy edges for getting in and out of bed.

The Silk & Snow Mattress is worth considering if you're looking for a budget-friendly bed-in-a-box for side sleeping. The 'Plush' variant of this all-foam mattress isn't as supportive as the Tuft and Needle Mint, but offers better pressure relief and body conformity, making it a great option for a range of side sleepers. The mattress is exceptionally responsive, so you won't feel tightly hugged, but it's not very bouncy, so it's not as easy to move around on. The company offers a longer 365-day trial period, so you have longer to make a decision compared to many bed-in-a-box mattresses, and a 15-year limited warranty.

This mattress offers even better motion isolation than the Tuft and Needle, so you'll only feel the largest of your partner's movements. It's cooling enough for hot sleepers, transferring heat efficiently from start to finish. The good-quality foam layers make it a reasonably durable option, so it should resist sagging and maintain its support and pressure relief performance for longer. However, its edge support is just alright, so you can't sleep too close to the sides without feeling like you might slip off. If you're a combination sleeper, especially in the heavier weight category, you might also want to opt for the 'Medium-Firm' or 'Firm' variant, which may provide better support when you're sleeping on your back or stomach.

  4. Best Cheap Mattress-In-A-Box

Pick if: You want a bouncy mattress for ease of movement, or you're a hot sleeper looking for a cheap option.
Skip if: You want a more durable cheap mattress.

Consider the Allswell Hybrid if you want to spend as little as possible on a bed-in-a-box with good performance. This Medium-Firm mattress offers a good balance of pressure relief and support for average-weight and heavier side and combination sleepers. While you won't sink into it much overall, a memory foam layer gives it a contouring, slightly hugging feel that adds some cushioning. However, lighter individuals will want something plusher, like the Silk & Snow Mattress, for side sleeping. This mattress is mainly available at Walmart (U.S.), and includes a 90-day free return period and a 10-year limited warranty.

The Allswell is even more cooling than the previous pick, so you might prefer it if you're a hot sleeper and its firmer feel works for you. Its excellent motion dissipation means you won't feel most of your partner's movements. It also offers excellent edge support, so it's a good option if you need a solid surface for getting in and out of bed. That said, it's not the most durable. There's one layer of good-quality foam, but its upper layers of lower-density foam will be prone to forming body impressions sooner.

  5. Best Mattress-In-A-Box For Cooling

Pick if: You're an average/heavier side sleeper and most mattresses make you feel overheated.
Skip if: You're a back or stomach sleeper, a lighter side sleeper, or prefer more enveloping mattresses.

If you're a hot sleeper and cooling is a big priority, consider the Purple RestorePlus Hybrid instead. This Medium mattress isn't the most versatile, but if it works for you, its cooling performance is hard to beat. We measured outstanding cooling when you first get into bed as well as over eight hours, so it'll dissipate heat efficiently enough even for persistently hot sleepers. While its unique gel-flex grid comfort layer doesn't provide great pressure relief for lighter people, otherwise, it's a good option for side sleepers. Like many bed-in-a-box manufacturers, Purple offers a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty.

This mattress has a non-enveloping feel, and its bouncy, responsive sleeping surface makes it easy to move around on. Its impressive motion isolation and edge support make it a good option for couples, since you won't feel most of your partner's movements, and its sturdy edges help make the sleeping surface feel a little bigger. It includes good-quality foam, which should help it resist showing signs of wear and maintain its performance for longer. However, keep in mind that not everyone will like its grid-shaped comfort layer, which is noticeable under the mattress cover, and it may not offer enough support for combination, back, or stomach sleepers.

  6. Best Mattress-In-A-Box For Back Pain

Pick if: You have back pain and need a balance of support and pressure relief, or you want a more durable mattress.
Skip if: You sleep hot or want sturdy edge support.

If you're looking for a bed-in-a-box that might help with your back pain, consider the Novaform Serafina Pearl. In general, Medium mattresses are recommended for people with back pain because they offer a balance of pressure relief and support. This particular model stands out for its consistently decent support across weight categories, and its memory foam comfort layers provide good pressure relief for most people; overall, it works for most body types and sleeping positions. It's also decently durable, with good-quality foam layers that will help it maintain its support for longer. This mattress is mainly available at Costco U.S., which advertises a return period with no time limit, and Novaform offers an unusually long 20-year warranty.

This all-foam mattress lets you sink into it significantly, but its memory foam layers are quite responsive and not very contouring, so it doesn't have a tightly hugging feel. Its great motion isolation makes your partner's movements less likely to wake you, since motion dissipates quickly and is mostly felt near the source, not all over the mattress. Its very good cooling is enough to keep most people comfortable, although hot sleepers will want better cooling. Also, its edge support isn't the best, so it's not ideal if you like to sleep near the side of the bed or want a sturdy surface for getting in and out of bed.

Notable Mentions

  • Casper Cooling Select:

The Casper Cooling Select is an all-foam mattress available at Costco (U.S.) that offers more support for heavier individuals than the Allswell Hybrid. While it's not as cooling and has worse motion dissipation, it's a good, cheap option for back and stomach sleepers in that weight category.

  • Sleep On Latex Pure Green Organic:

The Sleep On Latex Pure Green Organic is an all-latex bed-in-a-box. While it's not as versatile as the Tuft and Needle Mint, since it won't offer enough pressure relief for many side sleepers, if you're looking for a firm mattress for back and stomach sleeping, it's a supportive, durable option.

FAQs

What's the difference between a mattress-in-a-box and a regular mattress?

Mattresses in a box are compressed and rolled before shipping and are usually delivered by regular mail instead of scheduled delivery. Otherwise, mattresses-in-a-box can feature similar designs, features, and materials as standard, non-compressed mattresses.

How long does it take for a mattress-in-a-box to expand?

Most companies say to allow between 24-72 hours for full mattress expansion, although many say you can sleep on the mattress the same day you receive it. It's a good idea to check what the manufacturer's guidelines are for your specific mattress.

Should I be concerned about off-gassing?

Off-gassing happens when you unseal your vacuum-packed mattress, which releases trapped volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The off-gassing smell is part of the reason why you may want to wait a few days before sleeping on your new mattress. If you're concerned about the health effects of off-gassing, you can look for a mattress certified by an organization like GREENGUARD GOLD, CertiPUR-US, or eco-INSTITUT. These certifications mean the mattress or the foam inside it has been independently tested and doesn't exceed certain limits for VOCs.
