The Plank Luxe is an upper mid-range hybrid mattress with a flippable design: one side is 'Firm' and one 'Extra Firm.' The Plank Extra Firm Luxe, or the 'Extra Firm' side, has fewer comfort layers, including only a quilted top with fiber fill and polyfoam and a polyfoam transition layer. A layer of pocket coils in the middle of the mattress adds support for either side of the mattress. The manufacturer says the foam used in the mattress has GREENGUARD Gold Certified and CertiPUR-US certifications for not containing chemicals such as formaldehyde.

To see how the 'Firm' side of the mattress performs, see our review of the Plank Firm Luxe.

Our Verdict

Side Sleeping
  • 3.4

  • 4.8
    Average Weight
  • 6.8
    Heavy Weight

The Plank Extra Firm Luxe isn't well-suited for most side sleepers. The 'Extra Firm' side of the Plank Luxe has a very firm feel, and most people won't sink in enough for proper pressure relief. Its body conformity performance is awful for lighter people and bad for average-weight people. It's an okay choice for heavier side sleepers, as it offers passable body conformity for people in that weight category. However, you still might prefer a plusher mattress if you usually sleep on your side.

Pros
  • Okay body conformity for heavier people.

Cons
  • Poor body conformity for average-weight people.

  • Bad body conformity for lighter people.

  • 7.1

  • 6.4
    Heavy Weight

The Plank Extra Firm Luxe is best suited for lighter and average-weight back sleepers. Its solid support will prevent your hips from sinking in very far and will help keep your spine aligned. However, it's very firm and doesn't offer much pressure relief, so you may find it puts uncomfortable pressure on your lower back or shoulders. While it offers better pressure relief for heavier individuals, people in that weight category may want a more supportive mattress for back sleeping.

Pros
  • Impressive support for lighter people.

  • Very good support for average-weight people.

  • Decent support for heavier people.

Cons
None

    Heavy Weight

The Plank Extra Firm Luxe is well-suited for lighter and average-weight stomach sleepers. It offers great support for average-weight people and performs even better for lighter people, so it'll prevent your back from arching when sleeping on your stomach. That said, while it's reasonably supportive for heavier people, you might ideally want more support, especially if you always sleep on your stomach.

Pros
  • Okay body conformity for heavier people.

  • Impressive support for lighter people.

  • Very good support for average-weight people.

Cons
  • Heavier people may want more support for stomach sleeping.

6.5
Longevity

The Plank Extra Firm Luxe is moderately durable. The 'Extra Firm' side's foam layers are both made of dense, good-quality polyfoam. This will help the sleeping surface resist showing signs of wear, like body impressions, for longer.

Pros
  • 'Extra Firm' side contains good-quality, durable foam.

Cons
None
4.7
Pressure Relief

The Plank Extra Firm Luxe has a disappointing pressure relief performance. The 'Extra Firm' side of the mattress's foam layers are very firm, and you won't sink very much into it. As a result, its body conformity performance is insufficient for lighter and average-weight side sleepers. While it's more conforming for people in the heavier weight category, it'll still put quite a bit of pressure on your arm and shoulder if you sleep on your side. That said, its sleeping surface is extremely contouring, which adds some cushioning for back and stomach sleepers.

Pros
  • Highly contouring sleeping surface.

Cons
  • Poor body conformity for average-weight people.

  • Bad body conformity for lighter people.

  • Firm comfort layers create a less enveloping feel.

7.7
Support

The Plank Extra Firm Luxe's support performance varies depending on your weight. It's impressively supportive for lighter individuals and offers slightly worse but still very good support for average-weight people. This makes it well-suited for back and stomach sleeping since you'll sink in evenly. It's not as supportive for heavier individuals, but it has a decent performance that makes it suitable for back or combination sleepers in that weight category.

Pros
  • Impressive support for lighter people.

  • Very good support for average-weight people.

  • Decent support for heavier people.

Cons
  • Heavier people may want more support for stomach sleeping.

7.8
Cooling

The Plank Extra Firm Luxe has very good cooling. It dissipates heat efficiently enough to keep most people comfortable over an eight-hour night. However, some mattresses feel cooler during the first hour you're in bed, and it may not be quite cooling enough if you usually sleep hot.

Pros
  • Cooling enough for most people.

Cons
  • May not be cooling enough for hot sleepers.

8.7
Motion Dissipation

The Plank Extra Firm Luxe has excellent motion dissipation. You won't feel most movements, and larger movements, like someone rolling over, are mostly felt near the source, not all over the mattress. Motion dissipates somewhat slowly, which can make bigger movements more likely to wake you, but overall, it's a good choice for sleeping peacefully with a partner.

Pros
  • You won't feel most movements.

Cons
None
9.6
Responsiveness

The Plank Extra Firm Luxe is very responsive. The resilient foam layers bounce back quickly after being compressed, so the sleeping surface doesn't have a hugging or constricting feel. It's a bouncy mattress, which also helps make it feel easy to move around on.

Pros
  • Very bouncy, so movements feel supported.

  • Responsive sleeping surface won't make you feel stuck.

    Differences Between Sizes And Variants

The Plank Luxe comes in one firmness option, which has an 'Extra Firm' and a 'Firm' side. It comes in many different sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, Short Queen (60" x 74"), Olympic Queen (66" x 80"), King, Short King (72" x 75"), California King (36" x 84"), Split California King (36" x 84"), and RV King (70" x 74" or 70" x 80"). You can add a 'GlacioTex Cooling Cover,' which would be sewn into either sleeping surface.

These results are for the 'Extra Firm' side of the Plank Luxe. We tested the Queen size with a standard cover, and you can see our unit's label here. We tested the 'Firm' side separately, and you can see those results in our review of the Plank Firm Luxe.

    Popular Mattress Comparisons

The Plank Extra Firm Luxe is one side of the two-sided Plank Luxe, which also has a 'Firm' side that we've tested separately. True to its name, it has a firmer feel than the 'Firm' side of the mattress and offers less pressure relief, making it less suitable for side sleep. Both sides offer similar levels of support, however, and it's overall a good option for back and stomach sleepers.

Its excellent motion-dissipation performance helps it stand out from some similar mattresses, such as the Sleep On Latex Pure Green Organic and the Novosbed. However, some mattresses offer better support as well as more pressure relief. The Sleep On Latex and Bear Elite Hybrid are more supportive, especially for people in the heavier weight category, but also offer a slightly more enveloping feel.

If you're looking for more options, check out the best firm mattresses, the best cooling mattresses, and the best mattresses overall.

Sleep On Latex Pure Green Organic

    Track

The Sleep On Latex Pure Green Organic is better than the Plank Extra Firm Luxe for most people. The Sleep On Latex's better support and pressure relief make it more suitable for heavier and average-weight individuals. It's also more cooling and made of more durable materials. That said, the Plank Luxe offers significantly better motion isolation, so you might prefer it if you sleep with a partner and want a mattress with a very firm feel.

    Novaform Legacy

    Track

The Novaform Legacy is better than the Plank Extra Firm Luxe for most people. They both have good overall support and are well-suited for average-weight and lighter back/stomach sleepers, but the Novaform offers better pressure relief, as you'll sink into it a little more. It's more cooling, so it's better for hot sleepers. That said, the Plank Extra Firm is one side of a flippable mattress, so you can also sleep on its slightly softer 'Firm' side. Its edge support is also much better.

    Novosbed

    Track

The Plank Extra Firm Luxe is a little better than the Novosbed. These Firm mattresses perform very similarly and are both best suited for lighter and average-weight back and stomach sleepers. However, the 'Extra Firm' side of the Plank Luxe offers significantly better motion isolation. It's also much bouncier, so it feels easier to move around on.

This Plank Extra Firm Luxe is the firmer side of the flippable Plank Luxe. As the name suggests, it's marketed for people who want a very firm mattress, and it's very firm compared to many other 'Firm' mattresses.

It's well-suited for lighter and average-weight back and stomach sleepers, since its strong support will help keep your spine aligned. While it offers decent support for heavier individuals, back and stomach sleepers in this category may want something more supportive, like the Sleep On Latex Pure Green Organic. It also doesn't offer enough pressure relief for side sleeping, regardless of your weight.

    36 mm (1.4")
    Indent @ 110 kg (242 lb)
    57 mm (2.2")

The Plank Extra Firm Luxe has poor body conformity overall. Lighter and average-weight people barely sink into it at all, so if you're a side sleeper, it'll put a lot of pressure on your arm and shoulder. Heavier individuals will compress the quilted layer and sink a little into the foam layer beneath, but still, its body conformity is just passable. If you fall into the heavier weight range, it's not bad for occasional side sleeping, but lighter side sleepers and people who exclusively side sleep will want a more conforming mattress.

This mattress's support performance varies depending on your weight. It offers impressive support for lighter people and slightly worse but still very good support for average-weight people. If you're a back or stomach sleeper in one of those weight categories, it'll do a good job of supporting your hips and keeping your spine aligned. Its support for heavier people isn't as good. It's still decent, but if you always sleep on your back or stomach, you might want a more supportive mattress, such as the Bear Elite Hybrid.

The Plank Extra Firm Luxe doesn't have a very enveloping feel. The very firm foam layers prevent you from sinking in very much, so you feel like you're 'on' the mattress instead of 'in' it. The sleeping surface is very contouring, however, so it molds around you closely, which helps add a bit of pressure relief.

It has an excellent motion isolation performance. You won't feel smaller movements, and larger movements are mostly felt near the source, not all over the mattress. While some mattresses dissipate motion faster, making it less likely that you'll feel the mattress wobble or bounce, it's overall a great option if you sleep lightly.

It has incredible edge support. The edges of the mattress are lined with firm pocket coils and don't compress very much when you sit on the side of the bed. They form only a slight ramp outward, so you won't feel like you're being pushed off the side of the bed if you sleep near the side.

The Plant Extra Firm Luxe has very good cooling. The variant with the standard cover doesn't feel particularly cool when you first get into bed, but it has a better performance over eight hours. It's not ideal for hot sleepers, but it's cooling enough to keep most people comfortable.

The manufacturer doesn't say what the standard mattress cover is made of. You can also buy it with a 'GlacioTex Cooling Cover,' which is marketed as a more cooling option. According to Helix, which shares the same parent company as Brooklyn Bedding and also sells GlacioTex covers, the cover is made of polyester and polyethylene.

The transition layer is also made of polyfoam and has a similarly firm but bouncier feel. These layers help give the mattress a bouncy, responsive feel typical of polyfoam, which is generally more resilient than memory foam.

The Plank Extra Firm Luxe's polyfoam layers are dense enough to be considered good quality, which will help the mattress resist forming permanent indentations for longer. That said, some of it just meets the standard for good-quality foam, and mattresses that use high-quality foam, like the Sleep On Latex Pure Green Organic, will be more durable.

The quilted top includes a layer of fiber fill above a layer of polyfoam. It's quite thin at 3.2 cm (1.3"), but because of its very firm feel, most people won't sink past it. There's only one other foam layer for the 'Extra Firm' side of the mattress, a 5.2 cm (2.0") polyfoam layer that helps distribute your weight over the spring layer.

A layer of pocket coils in the middle of the mattress adds support, whether you're using the 'Firm' or 'Extra Firm' side of the mattress. This layer of 13-gauge pocket coils helps give the 'Extra Firm' side of the mattress its firmer feel, along with the layers of firmer foam.

Both of the foam layers have a very firm feel. The quilted top, in particular, is very firm for the upper layer of a mattress. Although it's not very thick, you may not fully compress it, which helps explain the mattress's low sinking and poor body conformity. The polyfoam transition layer is similarly firm. You may sink slightly into it, which adds a bit of pressure relief, and it helps distribute your weight over the support layer, so you won't feel its individual coils.

The spring layer has a very firm feel and helps add support, preventing the heavier parts of your body from sinking in too far. This layer has similar stiffness whether you're using the 'Firm' or 'Extra Firm' side of the mattress, so the 'Extra Firm' side's foam layers are responsible for its firmer feel.

The quilted top is moderately resilient, or bouncy. It doesn't have an extremely springy feel, but it responds quite quickly when you move. The polyfoam layer is more resilient, so it provides more 'push-back' and helps make the mattress bouncy overall.
