The AWOL Vision Aetherion Max is a premium ultra-short-throw DLP projector that sits above the AWOL Vision Aetherion Pro in the company's UST projector offerings. It's a triple-laser, pixel-shift 4k projector primarily meant as a living room or home theater projector that can sit close to the wall or screen, and has an IRIS system and Enhanced Black Level feature that provide the ability to balance brightness and contrast to specific setups and preferences. It runs Google TV for access to the most popular streaming and gaming apps, and includes three HDMI 2.1 ports, an audio out 3.5mm jack, two USB data ports, optical audio out, Ethernet, as well as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth compatibility. For gaming, it supports 4k @ 60Hz, high-refresh-rate 1080p modes at 120Hz and 240Hz, as well as VRR.

Our Verdict

0.0
Home Theater

The AWOL Vision Aetherion Max is a very good projector for a home theater. Most scenes have great depth, especially darker ones, though it doesn't do as well with bright scenes. That said, the projector also features a lens IRIS system, so you can boost its contrast at the expense of brightness for even deeper images. Colors look very rich, though the image is notably warm out of the box, so it does benefit from calibration. The projector doesn't remove judder from 60Hz signals, so motion looks jittery if you're watching from an older streaming device or cable box. Enabling High Refresh Rate Mode removes judder from these signals for 24p content, like most movies, but it downscales the image to 1080p. Finally, it does a good job of reducing rainbow flashes, but those sensitive to these may still see subtle ones, as well as color tearing.

Pros
  • Darker scenes have outstanding depth.

  • IRIS setting to trade brightness for contrast (and vice-versa).

  • Remarkably rich colors.

  • Rainbow flashes are subtle in most content.

  • Removes judder from most signals.

Cons
  • Some international shows (25p content) have uneven motion when using an older cable box or streamer.

  • Images have a very warm tint out-of-the-box.

  • Bright scenes look notably flatter than darker scenes.

0.0
Outdoors

The AWOL Vision Aetherion Max is acceptable as an outdoor projector. As is common with many ultra-short-throw projectors, it's bulky, lacks features for easy transport, and doesn't have zoom or lens shift, which makes setup more involved, so it's not ideal for impromptu backyard movie nights. On the plus side, this projector has very good overall brightness, and it also has an IRIS system that lets you further boost its brightness at the expense of contrast, helping the image punch through some ambient lighting. However, it should be viewed more as a projector for permanent indoor setups.

Pros
  • IRIS setting to trade brightness for contrast (and vice-versa).

  • Bright enough to fight some ambient lighting.

  • Google TV for easy access to most popular apps.

Cons
  • Bulky and heavy (consistent with other ultra-short-throw projectors).

  • No optical zoom or lens shift to help with setup.

  • Mostly manual setup process.

  • No carrying handle or features to help transport it.

0.0
Bedroom

The AWOL Vision Aetherion Max is a poor projector for bedrooms. As it's an ultra-short-throw projector, its bulky size and throw ratio mostly restrict it to being set up on a larger dresser, very close to the wall or screen. Setting up the image is a mostly manual process. There's no optical zoom nor lens shift, so the projector has to be perfectly centered, and while it has auto-keystone, it still requires you to use your phone. As such, it's better suited to a permanent setup than to a projector you can casually bring to the bedroom from time to time. Its fan noise settles after startup but remains audible in a quiet room, although lowering the projector's brightness helps.

Pros
  • Fan noise is only somewhat audible at quiet listening levels.

  • Google TV for easy access to most popular apps.

Cons
  • Bulky and heavy (consistent with other ultra-short-throw projectors).

  • No optical zoom or lens shift to help with setup.

  • Mostly manual setup process.

Gaming

The AWOL Vision Aetherion Max is an outstanding gaming projector. It has very low input lag for a responsive experience, and it supports a wide range of resolutions and refresh rates, including high-refresh-rate gaming at 240Hz at a lower 1080p resolution. Most scenes have really good depth thanks to the impressive contrast, although bright scenes look comparatively flatter. Combined with its very good overall brightness and outstanding color volume, this gives games a punchy look, while the projector's IRIS system offers extra flexibility to trade brightness for contrast (and vice versa) to fit your needs. One downside is that the projector is inaccurate out of the box with an especially warm tint, although a calibration addresses most issues on this front.

Pros
  • Darker scenes have outstanding depth.

  • Remarkably rich colors.

  • Bright enough to fight some ambient lighting.

  • Low input lag and excellent resolution and refresh rate support.

  • DLP imaging provides sharp, blur-free motion.

Cons
  • Images have a very warm tint out-of-the-box.

  • Bright scenes look notably flatter than darker scenes.

0.0
Brightness

The AWOL Vision Aetherion Max has very good overall brightness. It's bright enough for a living room with a bit of ambient lighting. It also has IRIS settings that adjust the lens' aperture so that you can trade brightness for better contrast (and vice-versa), so you have flexibility to adjust the image depending on your setup and screen size.

Pros
  • IRIS setting to trade brightness for contrast (and vice-versa).

  • Bright enough to fight some ambient lighting.

Cons
0.0
Contrast

The AWOL Vision Aetherion Max has impressive contrast. It's especially strong in dark scenes, so bright highlights during nighttime scenes really pop. The projector also performs well in mixed scenes, though images start to look notably flatter in scenes where most of the image is very bright. The projector's IRIS system lets you trade brightness for contrast (and vice versa), giving you the flexibility to adjust the image to personal preferences and specific setups.

Pros
  • Darker scenes have outstanding depth.

  • IRIS setting to trade brightness for contrast (and vice-versa).

Cons
  • Bright scenes look notably flatter than darker scenes.

0.0
Portability

The AWOL Vision Aetherion Max is a poor choice if looking for a portable projector, as is common with many ultra-short-throw projectors. It's a bulky, heavy unit that offers very few features to help you carry it from one place to another. Its setup is also mostly manual; it has no optical zoom nor lens shift to adjust the image, so the projector has to be centered to the wall or screen. Also, while it has auto-keystone, it still requires a phone to set it up. All in all, this projector is best suited for a permanent setup rather than one you regularly move from room to room.

Pros
  • Google TV for easy access to most popular apps.

Cons
  • Bulky and heavy (consistent with other ultra-short-throw projectors).

  • No optical zoom or lens shift to help with setup.

  • Mostly manual setup process.

  • No carrying handle or features to help transport it.

0.0
Color

The AWOL Vision Aetherion Max has good color performance overall. It has outstanding color volume, so saturated colors remain vivid across different lightness levels, giving movies, shows, animation, and games a rich, punchy look. However, one downside is that it's only somewhat accurate out of the box, and images have a warm tint, so calibration is worthwhile to ensure skin tones and scenery look natural.

Pros
  • Remarkably rich colors.

Cons
  • Images have a very warm tint out-of-the-box.

0.0
Gaming Responsiveness

The AWOL Vision Aetherion Max has exceptional gaming responsiveness. Its input lag is very low, which makes for a snappy gaming experience, and it also supports most resolutions, including higher-refresh-rate gaming at 240Hz at a lower 1080p resolution. As well, its DLP imaging technology helps keep fast-moving objects sharp and free of visible blur.

Pros
  • Low input lag for responsive gaming experience.

  • DLP imaging provides sharp, blur-free motion.

  • Excellent resolution and refresh rate support.

    Differences Between Sizes And Variants

We tested the AWOL Vision Aetherion Max. This projector is part of AWOL's line of ultra-short-throw DLP projectors, but is more closely related to the AWOL Vision Aetherion Pro. Both models share most of the same features: they're both pixel-shift 4k DLP projectors with an RGB triple-laser light source and a 0.20:1 throw ratio, and both feature an IRIS system that controls the lens' aperture so you can trade brightness for contrast, depending on your preferences. The main difference between the two is that the Aetherion Max has higher advertised brightness than the Aetherion Pro.

The company also offers the AWOL Vision LTV-3000 Pro, another ultra-short-throw projector, though it's not a variant of either the Aetherion Max or Aetherion Pro.

    Popular Projector Comparisons

The AWOL Vision Aetherion Max is a premium ultra-short-throw DLP projector that's a strong option for a light-controlled home theater or to use as a gaming projector. One of its biggest strengths is its impressive contrast across most scenes, as well as its Lens IRIS system, which lets you trade contrast for brightness to suit your personal preferences and setup. Its remarkable color volume gives most movies, shows, and games a rich and punchy look. For gamers, it has very low input lag for a snappy gaming experience, and it also provides the ability to game at a higher 240Hz refresh rate at a lower 1080p resolution. The main difference between the Aetherion Max and its counterpart, the AWOL Vision Aetherion Pro, is that the Aetherion Max gets much brighter, so it does better when there's some ambient light around. However, if you're planning to use the projector in a dark room and don't need the extra brightness, consider the Aetherion Pro.

A key downside of the AWOL Aetherion Max is its out-of-the-box image accuracy, so you'll want to calibrate it for a better viewing experience. It also offers little help with the setup, as it's mostly a manual process. If you're looking for a premium projector that's more plug-and-play, and are still looking at options outside of ultra-short-throw projectors, check out the Valerion VisionMaster Max or the XGIMI HORIZON 20 Max, which are short-throw and standard-throw projectors, respectively.

Check out our recommendations for the best 4k projectors, the best projectors for home theater, and the best short-throw projectors.

    Hisense PX4-PRO

    Track

The AWOL Vision Aetherion Max and the Hisense PX4-PRO are both high-end UST projectors. They both use DLP imaging technology with a laser light source, but the AWOL is a bit more well-rounded overall. This is thanks to the AWOL projector's improved contrast and color accuracy, so it delivers a more impactful viewing experience. You may also prefer the Google TV interface on the AWOL over the VIDAA system on the Hisense.

    AWOL Vision Aetherion Pro

    Track

The AWOL Vision Aetherion Pro and the AWOL Vision Aetherion Max are ultra-short-throw projectors that perform nearly identically. They both have great contrast, with a lens IRIS system to adjust brightness and contrast, and also feature remarkable colors for a rich, punchy viewing experience. The main difference is that the Aetherion Max is much brighter, so it performs better in rooms with some ambient light.

    Valerion VisionMaster Max

    Track

The Valerion VisionMaster Max and the AWOL Vision Aetherion Max trade blows. Both projectors have very good brightness and contrast, and are extremely colorful in most content. The Valerion is a short-throw projector that's more accurate out of the box, more effective at reducing rainbow flashes for those sensitive to them, and generally easier to move and set up. The AWOL Vision is an ultra-short-throw projector that's better for gaming thanks to its more responsive input lag, while its Lens IRIS system is great for users who want to trade contrast for brightness (and vice versa) based on their specific needs.

    NexiGo Aurora Pro MKII

    Track

The AWOL Vision Aetherion Max is better than the NexiGo Aurora Pro MKII. The AWOL is brighter, so it looks punchier in a dark room and can withstand more glare in a room with ambient lighting. The AWOL also has significantly more vibrant colors that are more accurate, so the image pops more while also staying truer to the filmmaker's intent. There's less of the rainbow effect on the AWOL, which is great for those who are sensitive to it. Additionally, the AWOL has Google TV built-in and offers better screen adaptation features to help with setup. On the other hand, the NexiGo has better contrast, but that doesn't make up for its other shortcomings.
