Our Verdict
The XGIMI HORIZON 20 is an excellent projector for movies. It combines high brightness, strong contrast, and vibrant color, so it performs well in both dark rooms and rooms with a bit of ambient light. Its contrast does weaken in near-dark scenes, where blacks can look slightly elevated, but overall, it's still an excellent choice for watching movies.
Great contrast with strong depth in most movie scenes.
Bright, so it still looks good with some ambient light.
Wide color gamut.
Near-blacks in dark scenes are raised.
High brightness can increase rainbow artifacts for sensitive viewers.
The XGIMI HORIZON 20 combines strong image quality with solid gaming features. It's very bright, colors look vibrant, and contrast is excellent, so games maintain good depth in most scenes. It supports high refresh rates, and it feels noticeably more responsive at 120Hz and above than it does at 60Hz, so it's best to use the faster refresh rates when possible. It also supports VRR, though enabling it introduces visible color separation artifacts, so whether it's worth using will depend on your tolerance for that trade-off. Overall, it's a very good projector for gaming.
Great contrast with strong depth in most movie scenes.
Bright, so it still looks good with some ambient light.
Wide color gamut.
Supports VRR and very high refresh rates (up to 240Hz at 1080p).
Feels snappy at 120Hz and 240Hz.
Near-blacks in dark scenes are raised.
60Hz input lag is noticeably worse.
VRR causes some visible artifacting.
High brightness can increase rainbow artifacts for sensitive viewers.
The XGIMI HORIZON 20 is a very bright projector. It's bright enough to handle a few lights in the room, and its brightness uniformity is excellent, so the image remains evenly lit instead of looking noticeably dimmer in the corners. It also maintains strong color light output, which helps bright scenes retain their vibrancy.
Bright, so it still looks good with some ambient light.
Strong brightness uniformity for a clean, even image.
High brightness can increase rainbow artifacts for sensitive viewers.
The XGIMI HORIZON 20 has great native contrast. It performs particularly well in the mixed-brightness scenes you'll see most often, so the image keeps solid depth once there's meaningful light on screen. Its main weakness is in very dark scenes, where near-blacks look a bit elevated.
Great contrast with strong depth in most movie scenes.
Near-blacks in dark scenes are raised.

Differences Between Sizes And Variants
The HORIZON 20 lineup includes three closely related RGB triple-laser models, with the main difference between them being rated brightness. The XGIMI Horizon S Max sits nearby as a Dual Light alternative with a different light source and a different smart platform.

Popular Projector Comparisons
The XGIMI HORIZON 20 is one of the best projectors at its price point. It has the same features as the more expensive XGIMI HORIZON 20 Pro and the XGIMI HORIZON 20 Max, but is a bit dimmer, so it doesn't perform as well as its more expensive siblings in brighter rooms. In darker rooms, however, it's just as good. It's also a very good gaming projector, with its only real weakness being its rather high input lag at 60Hz. If you care more about responsiveness than image quality, then the Hisense M2 Pro is more responsive overall, and the NexiGo TriVision Ultra is also quicker at 60Hz, but neither is otherwise quite as good as the XGIMI.

The XGIMI HORIZON 20 outperforms the Hisense M2 Pro in most ways. The XGIMI is brighter, has better contrast, and is more colorful. Still, the Hisense is generally more responsive for gamers, as it has lower input lag at 240Hz and especially 60Hz, with the XGIMI having a slight edge at 120Hz.
The XGIMI HORIZON 20 generally outperforms the XGIMI Horizon S Max in most ways. The HORIZON 20 is a bit brighter, has slightly better contrast, and isn't quite as loud under load. For gamers, it also has high-refresh-rate support, while the S Max is limited to 60Hz. Still, it does have lower input lag at 60Hz than the HORIZON 20, so it's worth a look if you don't game at 120Hz and 240Hz.
The XGIMI HORIZON 20 is noticeably better than the XGIMI HORIZON Ultra in every way. The HORIZON 20 is brighter, has better contrast, is more colorful and accurate, and is much more responsive for gaming with high-refresh-rate support.
The XGIMI HORIZON 20 and XGIMI HORIZON 20 Pro are nearly identical, with one difference: the 20 Pro is a bit brighter. That does make it a bit louder under load, but otherwise they perform similarly, with the same feature set.
We've independently bought and tested over 75 projectors and published detailed results for each, so you can decide which one to buy. These have all been tested under the same standardized methodology, allowing you to compare them side by side. We still have all these projects in our lab, so we can continually go back and compare them to ensure our reviews are still accurate. All our test methodologies are also public on our website, so you can validate the results yourself.
