Test Bench 0.13.1 aims to optimize our camera reviews by focusing on the most critical aspects. As part of the process, we removed subjective or redundant elements to streamline reviews and optimized the Video Dynamic Range test for greater accuracy and consistency across reviews.

Detailed Changes

We Removed The 4 Boxes From The Sample Picture Gallery

Although providing photo samples is very useful for getting an idea of a camera's performance, we've found that these boxes don't serve a meaningful purpose in the context of our review. Even when taken in the same locations, the images aren't captured under the same conditions, so they can't be reliably used to compare cameras. We'll be looking into upgrading this test with a more useful gallery in a future update to serve this purpose better.

We Removed The 4K Video Quality And FHD Video Quality Boxes

The low-light video test is, unfortunately, not repeatable because we have no control over the lighting conditions at the test location. The test scene extract also only analyzes a single frame from a short video, which isn't a reliable assessment of overall video quality. To evaluate video image quality from now on, we'll instead combine scores from the Rolling Shutter Effect and Dynamic Range. These metrics are more objective and offer a better, more comparable picture of a camera's video image quality.

We Removed The Luminosity Patch Detection Chart Box

This test is convoluted and doesn't serve a meaningfully better purpose than simply analyzing video dynamic range. We decided to remove it as it didn't add much value to the review.

We Optimized The Video Dynamic Range Test

The test now averages 45 frames from a single video and reports Dynamic Range only at Base ISO. This will help streamline the test and deliver a clearer result.
