What's Changed?

Our 0.13.2 test bench changes how we analyze image quality in our camera reviews. Our own in-house software now processes the photos for the Photo RAW Dynamic Range, Photo RAW Sharpness, and Photo RAW Noise tests, replacing the Imatest software we used previously. The results in our reviews look exactly the same as before.

We still photograph the same two charts: the ISO Standard Test Chart and the 36-patch Dynamic Range Test Chart. After the shoot, we use LibRaw, the open-source library that Imatest relies on, to convert each RAW file into a TIFF file. Then we run our own analysis in Python. The Photo RAW Dynamic Range test adapts the method from our Video Dynamic Range test, while the Noise and Sharpness tests closely follow Imatest's approach.

These three tests display the same measurements in the same format as in Test Bench 0.13.1. Both methods produce consistent results, so you can still compare these tests across the two test benches.

Why We Made This Change

Running our own analysis gives us full control over every step and makes our methodology more transparent. We can also test new cameras sooner, since we only need LibRaw to support a new RAW format. Our testers can now run the analysis and adapt the tests more easily in the future.
