Goal

Like nearly all smart electronics, TVs gather data on how you use them. Through technologies like Automatic Content Recognition (ACR), they know what we watch, and when, and they send that information back to ad brokers across the world. One of the simplest ways to avoid having your TV send your data back to the manufacturer is to never connect it to the internet. The goal of this small test bench update is to determine which TVs can be used without an active internet connection.

What's New In 2.2.1

  • Added a new Dumb TV section.
    • Offline Setup & Use Test

The goal of this new section is to document whether the TV can be set up and used without an active internet connection. We check whether the TV setup can be completed without ever connecting the TV to the internet or creating an account. This is just the beginning; we plan on adding more privacy-related tests in future updates. If there's a specific test you'd like to see, let us know in the comments below.

We have retested popular models. The test results for the following models have been converted to the new testing methodology. However, the text might be inconsistent with the new results.
